Juniors begin preparations for LHF President's Cup

On Monday, August 4, the Latvian U-20 national hockey team began preparations for the Latvian Hockey Federation (LHF) President's Cup at the Daugava Ice Hall.

The Latvian U-20 national team candidate pool includes six goalkeepers, 21 defensemen and 37 forwards.

The Latvian U-20 national team candidates will undergo seven days of training at the Daugava Ice Hall before the upcoming tournament. The U-20 national team candidates will play mutual test matches on August 6 and 12.

Due to the busy schedule of the clubs, Bruno Osmanis, Daniels Serkins, Markuss Sieradzkis, Rolands Naglis, Bruno Petrovičs, Oskars Briedis and Alberts Šmits will not participate in the U-20 training camp and the LHF President's Cup this year.

This year, in addition to the two home Latvian U-20 national teams – “bordeaux” and “white” – the Finnish Mestis League club “TUTO” (U-23), as well as HK “Liepāja”, HK “MOGO/RSU” and “Zemgale/LBTU” will also participate in the LHF President’s Cup. Six teams will be divided into two subgroups. Initially, the teams will play matches within their subgroups, but then there will be fights for places. All games will be played at the “Inbox.lv” ice rink.

“We are very pleased to continue what we have started and organize the LHF President's Cup. Last season, it was proven that this tournament helped our junior national team to screen candidates and successfully prepare for the U-20 World Championship in the elite. This is a great opportunity for all national team candidates to prove themselves. This year, we will also see three Premier League teams in the tournament – HK “Liepāja”, HK “MOGO/LSPA” and HK “Zemgale/LBTU” – as well as the Finnish club “TUTO”, which triumphed in this competition last year. Due to changes in US government policy, North American teams will not start in university funding this year, but next year we plan to return to the format with two North American university teams, which have already provisionally confirmed their participation in 2026. I wish all teams a successful summer and good preparation for the tournament August,” said LHF Sports Director Edgars Buncis.

Let us recall that last year, in addition to the two home Latvian U-20 national teams, the Austrian U-20 team “TUTO” also participated in the LHF President’s Cup, as well as two teams from the US National Sports College Association – “Castleton Spartans” and “Milwaukee Raiders”.

The Latvian Hockey Federation President’s Cup is planned as an annual U-20 tournament, which will take place before the upcoming season.
